The rise of waistcoats was in the 1660s when King Charles II became fascinated with Persian vests seen in the court of Shah Abbas. The new style was announced by royal decree, with Samuel Pepys recording in 1666: “The King hath yesterday in council declared his resolution of setting a fashion for clothes which he will never alter. It will be a vest..” The single-breasted waistcoat is crafted of fine 330g merino wool woven in a family-runned factory that’s been operating since the 17th century.
